Apple Needs This: Mplayit iPhone Arcade

Mplayit, formerly known as Mpowerplayer, is really making its rounds. The virtual video game arcade that lets you “try before you buy” has moved from its website to Facebook, then MySpace, and now the iPhone. The iPhone Arcade is actually an application on Facebook, but it enables you to preview games as well as iPhone applications before you purchase them.

If you recall, Mplayit’s previous application on Facebook allowed you to essentially preview mobile games before you spend the money to download them onto your phone. With the new iPhone arcade, Mplayit is looking to provide an iPhone-specific resource for users of the device, while also expanding beyond the game sector. The iPhone arcade includes both mobile games and mobile applications, which are all-encompassing when it comes to the iPhone. Have you noticed?

Zynga’s Latest iPhone Game: Scramble Live

Zynga’s at it again. The social gaming company has launched a mobile version of Scramble Live for the iPhone and the iPod Touch.

The game itself, if you’re unfamiliar, is a grid of letters that can be connected to form words (think word search with options for all-directional word creation). While the words themselves cannot be re-ordered, the grid can be rotated in its entirety. This gives you additional perspectives in order to find your words. As with many other Zynga games made for the iPhone, Scramble Live takes advantage of the accelerometer, though this particular use case may not be as exciting as an action-oriented video game.

I gotta admit this game is pretty addictive for me in its online Facebook app version. I know… I’m a sucker for word games and they’re of the few things I get viciously competitive about. So I’ll be happy to take advantage of some of Scramble’s social features in order to beat all of you.

Jajah Enables Phone Calls from the iPod Touch

Jajah is the latest to create a VoIP application specific for the iPod Touch. All you need is an iPod Touch and a decent WiFi signal, along with the Jajah application and you’re good to go. The appeal in such an application is the fact that there is yet one less difference between the iPod Touch and the iPhone. Granted the 3G network on the iPhone still reigns supreme when there’s no WiFi available (and when you actually have a 3G network signal). But having the option to make phone calls using your iPod Touch is certainly a benefit to those that would rather not sign their lives away to AT&T or hack their iPhone to work on another network.

Jajah isn’t the first VoIP service to create an application for the iPod Touch. Others, such as Truphone, have taken to the iPod Touch in order to extend their functionality across a myriad of devices. And that’s Jajah’s ultimate goal here as well. From PCs to cell phone integration, and onto the iPhone and the iPod Touch, Jajah is expanding the number of devices on which you can access one of its many services.
