7 Annoying Twitter Habits You Should Never Adopt

kailalogoAlright, so I’ll come out and say it: I use to be totally annoying on Twitter. Maybe it wasn’t always my own Twitter account (gasp! a clients account), but in the Twitosphere I accounted for some of the things that annoy avid users. While some of my behavior was based on naiveté, others behavior is usually just out of pure laziness. Let’s look at some of the common annoyances, and you can figure out just how annoying you are to your followers.

Great list! Thanks for your great advice! I have a Twitter account, and, yes, sometimes I do those things too!

  • Umm...Twitter itself is annoying.
  • I'm sorry, but all tweets are retweetable now! If your app doesn't support official retweets, then it's broken.

This article's annoyance factor puts it beyond consideration.
  • Yay
Twitter is freedom of expression, if anything annoys you, its simple to unfollow!!!

I like the way that even if you score a zero you're still mildly annoying. All tweeters are mildly annoying by default.

How about "An annoying website habit you should never adopt: Forcing readers to click through multiple pages to read one story."

The most annoying habit I see is (unfortunately) what a close friend practices -- no tweets, just RTs. He's a bright, funny guy yet his timeline is nothing but oure RTs with no added commentary. (Tell me why are you RTing this!) That and people with a relative handful of followers RTing posts from others/organizations with tens of thousands of followers.
  • I have seen that most people have 1 line automatic direct message which they use or its twitter default message which is usually deleted without reading, may be if u send direct message, it should be customized to give more weight so that end user % of reading your message increases
  • One more thing. The trend is probably dying but I still see people adding myloc at the end of their tweets and it's really annoying when they turn out to always be at the exact same place.
I follow a journalist and it was nice to see him turning the function on during the time he was covering the crisis in Bangkok but otherwise it just litters the tweets.

Same goes with the constant foursquare check ins. Ugh.
  • Love this list :) Exactly what I find annoying about some of the tweets I've seen. (Thankfully I don't get to see too much of those bathroom activities. Don't get it. It's so juvenile and old, if you know what I mean, LOL.)

To extend on the random reply point, I've seen also spammer who pick up popular keyword, RT my tweet and attach link that goes to places I have no idea. I was really pissed when that happened. Implying that I enforced such questionable link... good thing I have no influence on Twitter - but still that's not on.
  • I personally feel the most annoying thing about Twitter is telling people how they should use the service. If you don't like what someone is doing, then unfollow and/or block them. This is an opt-in/opt-out service.
  • And let's not forget about the thing that is so boring that the writer "could care less." That means you do care! If it's really boring, more than likely you don't care at all, or ou couldn't care less! 25 credibility points off!
  • Well in my opinion what is really annoying is all the marketing website who almost post every hour, but it is the power of tweeting and we don't want to be piss of by them then we can just unfollow them, right? anyway we all have that right to tweets whatever we want to tweets.

I disagree completely on long urls--shorter are better, but I don't want to follow a link to god knows where. Too much spam out there for that.

Thanks Davina. I agree, what is one persons mundane could be someone else's true voice. The ones I get most annoyed at are what someone is eating, especially if it's nondescript (I'm eating a great salad....well tell us what's on the darn thing so maybe I can get inspiration the next time I make a salad!). :)
  • Completely agree with all 7, but there are far more than that!
  • Good list, but there's no way to stop the #FF from a non-follower.. until it happens, then you block them I guess. Of course, we shouldn't #FF someone we don't follow ourselves. Kinda like the next one, random @replies. Hard to edit to 140 characters, but good to try. ITA with the mundane and banal, TMI tweets, auto DM; just say no.

And my score, a zero but on a curve. One person's mundane, may be another person's "personality" or authentic "human" voice.. so a little of the casual, fun tweets can be ok. I don't think it's "mundane" when I tweet "off topic" to cheer for LSU or a great new wine I've discovered. FWIW.
