Should Zynga Remove Fighting Pit Bulls From Mafia Wars?

PETA, the animal rights group, posted a blog post criticizing Zynga’s Mafia Wars for promoting cruelty to animals with its latest ‘animals’ update.  The animals update allows players to bring animals along with them on their missions and can use them to attack other animals and people.  It’s certainly something that happens in a lot of games, but just because it’s common doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right.  What do you think about this?  Let us know in the comments and read more after the jump.

Jennifer O’Connor was the writer at the PETA blog, and she explains that this is especially troublign because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision which struck down a law banning the distribution of videos glorifying animal fighting and cruelty.  She goes ont o explain that pit bulls are one of the most abused dogs, partly because of their reputation as wild fighters.  They are “frequently kept chained or penned, they are taunted and trained to be aggressive, and they are beaten and starved—sometimes to death.”

Jennifer also does explain that she is surprised that this move would come from Zynga who have been active in raising money for charities such as the San Francisco SPCA.  The funny thing is that to raise that money, Zynga asks you to purchase bulldogs as friendly pets in their YoVille game.  Jennifer asks Zynga to listen to their appeal and remove the fighting bulldogs from their game.  She also asks readers to leave polite comments asking Zynga to leave fighting animals out of the game, as well.  What do you think?

Um animals were domesticated and raised to serve man, the first wolves served as guards and hunters. What makes you think that it is not in thier blood to attack anything they see as weak.
If you think its wrong to have pets then outlaw them and release them back into the wild I'm sure within a few generations the dogs you love as pets would be the vicious wild animals they used to be. Of course most of the frigid rat dogs (Yo quiro taco bell!) that people have designed will be food for the pit bulls and mastifs but hey that's nature and isn't that was PETA wants? Hell why don't we abandon society and all go live in the forest, I know I would be fine but I bet 1/2 the fruitcups at PETA would be bear shit in a week. And as far as games go you would do better to stop the evening news from reporting what people do to other people if you want to stop bad influences.

It is not just a game people! Humans kills humans and they are responsible for their behavior. And they get their just reward in court. Animals are not responsible for their behavior as we are the ones who abuse them and make them fight. When you sensationalize fighting Pit Bulls, you attract anti social people even more and you make ordinary citizens believe that Pit Bulls are SOLEY associated with criminal activity. The innocent dogs don't asked to rip each other apart. Until we stop sending the message that this breed is EVIL, we will continue to see them in our shelters, representing 70-80% of the population throughout this county and killed by the MILLIONS each and every year. Wake up and quit telling yourself it's just a game. Pit Bulls once enjoyed a great reputation as a wonderful addition to a family. Until we quit being ignorant, they will continue to pay the price. When it's your favorite breed they go after, maybe you'll understand. Until then, I guess it's easier to live in peaceful oblivion and not understand that using Pit Bulls in this way MAKES THE ENTIRE BREED LOOK EVIL TO OUR COMMUNITY and therefore we ban them and our tax money pays to eliminate them from our community. We must call a spade a spade. A murderer is a murderer. A pit bull is an animal. I do not support PETA because I do believe they talk out of both sides of their mouth. But seriously people, I see HUNDREDS of Pit Bulls a week in my shelter alone that are ALL EUTHANIZED simply because they happened to be born a Pit Bull. It sucks! It's heartbreaking. And, until you go to your local shelter, meet them by the hundreds, get your face licked over and over, knowing ALL OF THEM WILL BE DIE because they are Pit Bulls (days, weeks, months, years old) you don't have a right to comment, because you don't have a clue of their desperate plight.
  • DamonHicks
So you champion pitt bulls by killing them all? Way to go, savior of pitt bulls! I guess Hitler was trying to save jews by your logic "ALL OF THEM WILL BE DIE because they are Pit Bulls (insert Jews here) (days, weeks, months, years old) you don't have a right to comment, because you don't have a clue of their desperate plight." Yeh, I know thier plight, they got sent to your shelter of death"
  • Lisa
NO I do not work at the shelter Mr. Hicks. I work full time, have a family and 6 dogs and 2 cats. 3 are Pit Bulls. I also am the Founder of Save Our Homeless Pets, Polk County Florida. I am fighting for the Pit Bulls and other strong breed dogs in my community because they are not offered to our public for adoption. I believe every dog should be viewed as an individual, and it is unacceptable that they are killed simply because they are born a specific breed. This game is not making them look like the loving, loyal lap dogs that I know them to be, and hurts our efforts to change the publics perception of them. Therefore, I do not support this game. If I had the power to change the policies at the shelter in my community, I would have done so already. I just did an interview with the newspaper in our community to hopefully make them more aware of their plight. The way they are treated is not fair. The Pit Bull symbolized the U.S. on a World War One propoganda poster. "Tighe", a PB type dog helped sell Buster Brown shoes. And, Pete, the pup from Little Rascals was the 1st AKC registered Staffordshire Terrier. Pit Bull type dogs enjoyed an excellent reputation until the federal government amended the Animal Welfare Act and made trafficking in dogs for the purposes of dog fighting a crime. The media focused on the DOGS instead of the people who fought the dogs - the dogs made headlines and that's when all the monster myths began to emerge (i.e. they have locking jaws - they do not) Yes, Mr. Hicks, I now my Pit Bulls. I love them, and in every spare time of every day that I have I fight for them. I do not believe that makes me comparable to Hitler. Have a nice day.

I think they are viewed as dangerous for adoption because of thier original breed purpose and they were specifically created to be a fighting dog and it is hard wired in thier brains to have the CAPACITY to kill but I don't think they should be punished for being a pit bull but they should only be adopted to families trianed to handle pit bulls. Take my example, I have been in the Marines for 15 years and had 2 combat tours in Falujah, Iraq. I have been trained to kill without question and have been asked to do so on several occasions. When I got back from Iraq I would have nightmares and my wife would try to wake me up only to get choked or hit before I knew what I was doing. She quickly learned not to touch me when I was having a nightmare. If I was a pit bull would you kill me because I was beyond repair, or put me into a family that knew how to handle my situation. And who is to blame for my behavior, me, the Marine Corps, the terrorist, or a game developer who accuratly portayed me as damaged goods.
  • Lisa
You are not damaged goods Mr. Hicks. You are a war veteran. You've seen things that I can not imagine, nor do I believe any one can unless they have worn your shoes. I can, however, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your contribution to our country. You are a hero. I will send prayers your way in hopes that someday you can get a goods nights sleep without those awful nightmares. That must be horrible. I am sorry you are going through that.

As far as the damaged Pit Bulls go. I guess we could loo at Michael Vicks case. Georgie comes to mind. You can read all about her at BestFriends.org. She was his champion fighter until she got too old. Then they pulled all of her 42 teeth and most likely tied her to a rape stick so she could breed more champions for him - over and over and over. She now lives at Best Friends and travels the country with the trainer there. She's even been on the Ellen Degeneres show. She's quite a charmer. Can she be around other dogs safely? The last I saw she was still not able to do so. I don't know if that has changed or ever will. But she has someone who understands and gave her another chance. Unfortunately, some of them have been so mistreated that they are beyond repair and must be put to sleep. But only 1 of Michael Vicks 50 dogs was deemed to damaged and was put to sleep. Many of them are living in homes with other dogs and a lot of them have become Pet Therapy dogs. You can read a lot more about those dogs at BadRap.org.

Back to your situation. In my opinion we have a commitment to all who serve this country and owe it to them to get them the help they need (whatever that help may be) upon their return. That is the very least we can do. None of you are throw aways. You are courageous, honorable men and women who give your all to the country and we, in return, should make sure you are well taken care of when you come home. Take care of yourself Mr. Hicks. God Bless.

NO, the murder and crime part is NOT ok... Why not exterminate this dumb game from the face of the earth once and for all!?

Animals are not like people; they do not perpetrate harm; they are not malicious. To say PETA and the likes need to care about people before animals is ignorant. we are caretakers for all the meek on earth. exploiting anybody or anything is wrong. Dogs are born to give nothing but love to their owners and humans in general; to exploit that is disgusting! It's scientific data that shows a link to mistreating animals to abusing humans. Get a clue! Mafia Wars should do whatever they wish to sell a buck. People should avoid using them or playing any Zynga games to show it's not tolerable.
  • DamonHicks
animals do perpetrate harm! ever seen a cat play with a mouse, I have watched a wild mother cat catch and break a field mouses' legs to let her kittens play with it to develop its killer instinct. Or how about a shark ripping off a seals flippers and attack it for hours by flipping up into the air untill it bleeds to death before eating it. These are wild animals doing what they do not because man taught them to but because thats what wild animals do! Stop spreading lies that animals are fluffy cuddly things that man has corupted to do evil.
  • I had thought the animals addition to be quite silly at first. But after thinking about this article a little while I've changed my mind. PETA has made this into a truly great addition to MW. I can be satisfied every time I use an animal in MW that I'm pissing off a liberal. And better yet Zynga is making money to annoy the liberals. Now thats capitalism at work!
  • I'm against animal cruelty and all.. But cmon, animal fighting is pretty tame compared to some of the things characters are 'doing' in Mafia Wars... Heck just this morning I iced a dozen people, because I felt like it! The nutcases over at PETA are once again showing they have no sense of proportion (anyone remember them saying chicken farms were exactly the same as WWII concentration camps?).
  • lonesomeluke
Let me get this straight - Mafia Wars is based on people killing other players, robbing from them, etc. Suddenly, using animals is a no-no? I don't get it. If they are concerned about virtual animals fighting, where is the concern for the virtual PEOPLE getting killed in the game? PETA is so whacked. By the way, in the real world they are so concerned for animals but ignore the fact that human babies are aborted every day. I love animals myself, but they need to get their priorities in order.
  • Dutchiamx
This is just a game. People are just having fun with how they fight through this application. But game it may be, when it's too violent is not good anymore. Even if this is only virtual, not the real world it doesn't mean we won't adapt the cruelty we see. And I say yes, remove this animal in a fighting and violent environment.

It's just really frustrating that people don't realize how brainwashed our society is. People torture and kill animals for the sole purpose of making money... or for NO reason at all! :( The same zombies that play this mafia war game will probably wake up tomorrow and decide to buy a puppy that will be tortured, poisoned with steroids, and trained to attack the "enemy".
  • Alex
It`s a waste of time trying to explain the people that they are being brainwashed at every second of their lives through the media/TV that they love so much. It`s like trying to teach astrophysics to a monkey. And yes, remove the poor dogs from the game.
  • Guest
WRONG message... period! The argument that violent games make people violent is not retarded... Retarded are the primitive beings that inhabit this planet. We live in a society that tortures animals, most people are completely dominated by the corrupt media... people that have no idea what is really going on in the world, but know the names of all American Idol participants from all seasons. Anyway, using animals to attack other animals and people definitely sends the WRONG message to those who play this dumb game! YES, YES, YES... Zynga should remove Fighting Pit Bulls From Mafia Wars. That is all!
  • DamonHicks
It is a game about low life criminals and fighting dogs are a part of that. hmmm people kill more people with guns but why don't try taking guns out of the game and replace them with fairy wands that sprinkle happy PETA dust on thier enemies.
  • Lisa
Mr. Hicks you are correct! More people are killed by their own guns in their own homes than by dogs! Do we ban guns? No. I do see your point. But please understand. When we associate this entire breed with these "low life criminals" (your words not mine), we link them in the public mind almost exclusively with criminal activity. And that is why they will continue to die. That is why they will never be viewed as individuals as they deserve. Are you getting it now sir?
  • DamonHicks
I don't believe that the general public views them as an unsalvagable breed, but because of thier use in gambling and as guard dogs by the "low life criminals" they have a bad reputation. Not because games portray them as such but because the criminals still use them as such. If you want to change the publics view don't attack a game developer for portaying them exactly as they are used by criminals contact your congressmen and ensure that any use of animals for sport or fighting becomes a felony. Only then will you change the publics view. I will admit my view is skewed because when I lived in Washington DC in the 80's; there were several pit bull owners that shot up thier dogs with steroids, and one owner only feed his dogs with live rabits that they had to kill if they wanted to eat. Then one day I walked past this house and the dog barked at me and I started to run in fear and the dog ripped its 5gallon bucket of concrete out of the ground and chased me 2 blocks before catching me and ripping off a part of my cheek and 3 teeth requireing 244 stitches to patch me back up. If I can go through that and know that it wasnt the dogs fault but the owners why would the general public not see that its the owners fault and not the dogs that are trained to attack any fear or weakness. It is just my opinion that treating the symptoms and not the disease (i.e. attacking the game developer not the criminals) will only make people who play the games not like your stance because you make them feel like you are attacking them when all they want to do is play a game in thier spare time.
  • Lisa
Couldn't agree more, and believe me I am at the Commissioner meetings, trying to change the ordinances and do all that I can do. Wish me luck. And I think after going through something that horrific, the face that you can still view each dog as an individual and place the blame on the owners where it belongs - is just awesome. Wish we had more people like you in my county.
  • Guest
Exactly!!! It's a game about low life criminals... How retarded is that!?

(linkback) Yes or No? Should Zynga Remove Fighting Pit Bulls From Mafia Wars? [VOTE] - http://www.pikk.com/39550

Mafia Wars should be allowed to keep their Pit Bulls. We have war games where people fight and kill each other...is that cruelty of people? Let's shutdown all those games...I'm sure the gaming/computer industry won't mind!
  • Benji
Jesus, this is about as stupid as the whole inane retarded "violent video games make people violent" argument. Its a fucking game, get over it.

  • Mafia Girl
First, I am opposed to any animals being used as weapons in Mafia Wars. The Cartoonish ones, like the Laser Squirrel are funny and "ok" in my opinion. Lions, Tigers, Bears, and pitbulls?
The point is Animals used by supposed mafia members, is WRONG message. Look at Tipi Hedrend winning a Genesis Award, for her tireless efforts to bring awareness of the responsiblity we have for All animals on earth. The Large Cat Reserve she runs, is for people who have lost interest, or been unable to deal with the large cats they once had as pets, here...in the USA. So, she lets them live on her property, and treats them with dignity and I so respect her for that. Using animals this way in MW is not sending a good message to anyone. So, putting a dog with large cats, makes no sense but in fairness, they have also used scorpions and other animals that can bite or sting. I agree though, leave the dogs out of this. wrong message once again. This is coming from someone who has been attacked by a pb mix. Dog responsible? no...owners were by teaching it to be guard dog, then having NO FENCE, and on that day, NO LEASH. Dog was doing its job, as he was trained. Dogs are loyal. Owners like that are idiots. dog good, owners bad.
the picture of this pitt bull is of a trained fighting dog, one like the Michael Vick Cottage Industry.
We need stronger Animal Laws!!!! Longer sentences for people that abuse animals, or neglect them. Money, to help those that are trying their best to help the animals in their area. PETA...Carry On!!!! Keep on keeping on until everyone's eyes are opened. Even the bible says that you can tell a good man....by how he treats his animals!
