Facebook And Twitter Usage Could Raise Your Home Insurance Premium By 10%

Homeowners Insurance IconThe home insurance premiums of Facebook and Twitter users could be raised by as much as 10%, according to a recent report. Social media and location aware services such as Facebook, Twitter, Buzz, Foursquare, Gowalla and others can alert criminals when a user is at a specific spot and not at their home.

This unintended usage of location based services was so aptly highlighted by the recent launch of PleaseRobMe, a new location based service, which streams updates from a host of location based networks to point out when a user is not at his home. The inherent conclusion, is that if a user is not at home, it is super easy to break into his home. Please Rob Me’s mission statement reads as follows:

The danger is publicly telling people where you are. This is because it leaves one place you’re definitely not… home. So here we are; on one end we’re leaving lights on when we’re going on a holiday, and on the other we’re telling everybody on the internet we’re not home. It gets even worse if you have “friends” who want to colonize your house. That means they have to enter your address, to tell everyone where they are. Your address.. on the internet.. Now you know what to do when people reach for their phone as soon as they enter your home. That’s right, slap them across the face.

The goal of this website is to raise some awareness on this issue and have people think about how they use services like Foursquare, Brightkite, Google Buzz etc.

For better or worse, home insurance companies are quick to take note of this situation. Darren Black, the head of home insurance at Confused.com, thinks that if these location based services goes mainstream, expect the insurance providers to raise the premium of people using such services by as much as 10%. As explained by Black:

I wouldn’t be surprised if, as social media grow in popularity and more location-based applications come to fore, insurance providers consider these in their pricing of an individual’s risk. We could see rises of up to 10pc for people who use these sites.

Criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their information gathering, even using Google Earth and Streetview to plan their burglaries with military precision. Insurance providers are starting to take this into account when they are assessing claims and we may in future see insurers declining claims if they believe the customer was negligent.

Black has recommended users of location based services to never post their real home address or other personally identifiable information like postal code, phone numbers etc on social sites. The users are further advised to not friend people they don’t know. Confused.com has even gone as far as suggesting that individuals avoid location based services all together.

Do you think location based services reveal too much information? Do you see any value in such services? Should insurance companies be monitoring this information?

  • I have to say that if you are posting stuff like that where your address is visible, then maybe you don't deserve to have nice stuff.

I understand that Facebook can tell people when you are not at home for quite a long while, but I don't understand one aspect of this: does Facebook also tell thieves what your address is... and how they can find you...

They can not be serious! You can not just increase the home insurance premium just because the owner is using a social network. It is true that personal information can be collected through such services but won't be enough to prove that an individual is at home or not. One can log in from wherever they want. Insurers should be very careful with this increase in the premium because they can start losing clients.

Sometimes people give inaccurate information on applications, and when insurance companies review a policy, note the wrong information

  • The problem with social media is... there are more people writing it than reading it. That isn't very social, huh?

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in using Facebook also.

The initiative taken for the concern is very serious and need an attention of every one. This is the concern which exists in the society and needs to be eliminated from the society as soon as
    possible.

    @ TODDPARIS,
I ain't mad at you, good comments and observaion and its your choice.
  • ROSE
@ toddparis I agree with you but how much info can you find on ME. I haven’t given you my last name or what country, city or state, or parish, UK or whatever that I live in. The only way anyone can find out anything about you is that YOU yourself tell it. One thing I learned from the place where I was employed how to keep my personal information to myself and by using my 1st name, providing it is ROSE, well how much are you or anyone going to find out about me. I ain’t telling. To each their own, I LOVE FB.
  • toddparis
@ ROSE. Good for you, your not most people and if more were like you which the general public isn't, this article wouldn't have been written. If more follow your example that would be great. Just remember, if a criminal wanted to steal your identity, they probably could (much larger issue than FB).
    I hate FB.
  • There is nothing wrong with using social media ... but use common sense and keep your private information private. Social media is a great tool, but doesn't mean we need to post every bit of information to be useful.

    Let's be reasonable, adults.
  • Your headline certainly got my attention. I thought "how come?" but once I read, it was obvious. Kinda like leaving the key under the door mat... makes it easy for unwelcome visitors to wander around when you're out.
    Thanks for the alert.

    Hello Ms. Victoria,
Thanks for your comment. You are so right at the observation you made about leaving the key under the door mat. People won't know your business unless you tell them. On FB, you don't have to use your real name if you don't want to. However if you don't, the honest people won't be able to find you. One FB person that I know gave a different state that he lives in & he lives in another state that is 1000 miles away. FB is a good place to find people and you have the option to accept or decline them too. One of my e-mail pals found over a hundred relatives on FB, she is from another country.

It's OK to use FACEBOOK but you are NOT required to tell all your business. I have found old acquaintaces, X-Co workers and family I didn't know I had. It is up to you how much information you let others know about you and you can make FB as public or private as you want.
  • toddparis
do you really think criminals won't find a way to access your FB private info whether you want them to or not? If they can hack into Bank Accounts I think they'll figure out facebook and probably have already. Many FB users are more concerned about their volume of contacts rather than privacy. Also, what is to stop others from posting private info about other FB users and basically out them to the world! Social media is a privacy nightmare which I stay away from.
  • Thats very true. thats why i dont use facebook
