Not sure what Gladwell said, but I was trying to say (in my comment that didn't appear) that the term "expert" used to be applied if you had completed roughly 10,000 hours of of relevant work/ activity. At 2000 work hours per year (full-time at 40 hrs/ wk x 50 wks/yr), that's 5 years. I'm surprised to see how many people do something (barely) for a year and call themselves experts. I can understand 3 years these days, when life is "faster," but 1 year? Maybe true for some people, but not most. Hmm. Disqus isn't posting my comment.
