Put Facebook Chat on Your Own Site

Userplane/Converdge Screenshot Yesterday, Adam Ostrow wrote about a new tool which combines Userplane’s chat technology and Converdge’s white label social network platform to enable websites to include chat within their websites. The new instant message chat client mimics the functionality of the highly popular Facebook chat application.

While chat on your website is not really a new thing, the similarities between this design and the design of Facebook’s instant message client are striking. As Adam points out though, the functionality of this new client is a little more full featured than what Facebook currently provides. “Beyond simple text messaging, thereâ€™s video chat, VoIP Voice over Internet Protocol calling, and games, for example.”

For those looking to integrate this new chat on your website, you are going to need be running Converdge for it to work unfortunately. This new platform looks pretty slick and I’m guessing that we’ll see more of this type of chat interface in the near future. Have you found chats that are integrated into other websites to be of use?

Try http://www.zopim.com - it retains your chat history when page is refreshed and looks nice, and it only allows you to chat with a certain person

Also, if you change pages within that site like switch to another forum it removes your current chat. Starts all over

Footchat is great but has no administrative control and if you have a forum with 5000 active users the online user box is ridiculous. Plus anyone can message any user online and can harrass other users. It still needs a lot of work but easy to put on your site just to chat. Also, who designed the Facebook Chat? I would pay to host my own footerchat and get it intergrated into vBulletin 3.x if anyone is interested.

My friends use FB's chat regularly. The vast majority of my 500+ friends are high school and college students. I personally find it useful to have FB's chat included along with MSN, AIM, Y! and GTalk in my Digsby client.

I've been wondering about how well Facebook Chat is doing. Nick, do you have any stats on the percentage of members who actually use FBChat? It hasn't caught on among my group of friends at all, except for the handful who are government employees and can no longer access GChat.
