Sex Offenders Get Banned From Social Networks

According to Andrew Einhorn, Indiana has now banned sex offenders from all social networks, chat rooms and instant message applications. While the ban will be put in place it doesn’t ensure that they won’t still use the services. As such parents should still be actively involved in monitoring their children’s online activity.

As children become socially engaged online at a younger age, the security of children is becoming increasingly important. As such various measures are being taken across the country but these actions take time as they work their way through our government’s bureaucratic systems. My guess is that we will soon see the active monitoring of computer use by registered sex offenders.

It’s a similar concept to house arrest. If you are a threat to society online, you probably should be monitored. We are going to see a huge wave of legal issues arise over the next decade all related to online issues. As citizens spend more time online, it is increasingly important to protect individuals’ privacy. Additionally as more time is spent online I have a feeling that we will begin to see the policing of digital activity. What do you think?

    Depends on how big a group "sex offenders" includes and what wisdom there is in lifetime house arrest. Also, once the infrastructure is set up to track these people, why not also track copy right violators, people who use websites to find speed traps, people who use the "rate my cop" websites, people that browse porn in communities that have city ordinances against it. And once that is done, why not track down whose been visiting whistle blower websites, people visiting opposition political parties. And why stop at computers? Shouldn't we also be doing this for the mail and phones? I mean, sex offenders in the past had to use the mail and phones to commit their crimes. And why stop and communication when road side checks would be so much more effective?

    I agree with Matthew's comment. Besides, how are they going to track down a convicted "sex offender" who uses a fake email address to create a fake Facebook or Myspece account and put up fake pictures? Those companies can not legally track the person's IP address to their local ISP and obtain the person's account information without legal reasons (like evidence of stalking or other illegal activity). It would be nice if politicians would stop thinking about what would get them a gold star with the community so they get reelected, and start using their heads. Everyone is so scared of the convicted sex offenders, but they totally forget once critical concept - IT'S THE ONES WHO HAVE NOT BEEN CAUGHT YET THAT THE COMMUNITY SHOULD BE SCARED OF. I really wish this brain-dead world would do their research on things......
