Hi!

My personal oppinion is that social networking as it is brings money mostly to advertisers. The thing they lack is the opportunity of direct sales. People lose too much time, searching for useful contacts, groups and so on and it can never be guaranteed that it would help them in moneymaking.

Actually, browsing through the Internet I came across several social networks of a different type. They are aimed at helping people sell their stuff online. Some even have a feature of direct sales making. They specialise in digital content selling and allow uploading the files to your personal space and sell them from there. The options of making friends, communicating, placing your info, etc., as in common social networks are also present there.

Unfortunately, I have lost the list of those social networks, the only example I managed to recall was http://atbizz.com/.

A monetization idea - adapted from a discussion within one of Seth Godin's books - would be for SNS's have newsletters on topics that interest members, and monetizing the (ugh) web 1.0 way.
